ADJECTIVES


ADJECTIVES


- Describing word.
- Tell about a person, place and thing.
- Modify nounsor pronouns (more specific)
- Add information -size, colour, age, material, other attributes and qualities.
- e.g : The back room was filled with large yellow pails.
           The hall was dark and dusty.
    


> ADJECTIVES ARE IDENTIFIED BY THEIR ENDINGS (SUFFIXES)
  • ful – wonderful
  • eous – gorgeous
  • y – funny
  • ish – childish
  • ble – workable
  • ial – dictatorial
  • ent – different
  • less – useless
  • ng – exciting
  • ly – friendly
  • ar – familiar
  • ive – abrasive
  • ic - heroic
  • ese - Japanese
  • al - bridal



TYPES OF ADJECTIVES

1) ATTRIBUTIVE ADJECTIVES
    - Come before the noun
       e.g : good runner.
               blue sky.
               red shoes.

2) PREDICATIVE ADJECTIVES
    - Come after noun and a linking verb - be , become, get, seemed
        e.g : The scarf is pink.
                He is honest.
                That patient seemed nervous.

3) POSTPOSITIVE ADJECTIVES
    - Come immediately after the modified noun
       e.g : court martial
               battle royal
               body politic
               Governor General

4) QUALITATIVE ADJECTIVES
     These adjectives identify a quality that a person, an animal or a thing has
     - Size,shape, character, age.
     - This adjective is gradable
       e.g : clean, cleaner, cleanest
               easy, easier, easiest

5) COLOUR ADJECTIVES
    - specify the colour of things.
       e.g : green shirt
               black stripes
    - Qualitative adj - bright, dark, light ( show strength & intensity of the colour)
      e.g : light brown
              bright red scarf

6) COMPOUND QUALITATIVE ADJECTIVES
    
    

   > Qualitative adj, also express speaker/ writer's opinion.
      - Strong feelings - e.g : absolute rubbish
                                              total bliss
                                              I think that dress is beautiful.
                                              It was an exciting trip.


7) INTERROGATIVE ADJECTIVES
    - which or what
     - e.g : what book are you reading?
                Which one is yours?

8) DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVE
     - This, these, that, those, and that
     - e.g : When the librarian trip over that cord, she dropped a pile of books.
                ( that- modifies the noun cord)
     - Space - e.g : That picture on the wall is interesting.
                               I like these shoes that I am wearing.
    - Time - e.g : Those years were fun when I was a kid.
                           This afternoon I will sleep.



e.g : He has a  small square new red chinese cotton sleeping bag
